[blindkid] Braille Music Sources

Yes, you can find more and more braille music scores available for download
on the NLS BARD site. If you have a braille display or braille embosser,
you can use them very well. It is a wonderful resource.

Our company, Dancing Dots, publishes a series of courses authored by Richard
Taesch entitled An Introduction to Music for the Blind Student: A Course in
Braille Music Reading. You may borrow these courses for up to six months
from NLS or order your own copies from our site ( www.DancingDots.com ).

A few years ago, Richard and I wrote a little book together called Who's
Afraid of Braille Music. I believe you can find it on BARD. I recommend it
to anyone who, like Alyssa, has received the mistaken impression that "Many
of the notes don't seem to follow any sort of pattern." Nothing could be
further from the truth.

We also publish a suite of software that augments braille music with verbal
and musical cues to make what we call a talking braille score. This
approach allows you to learn by ear if that is your preference while giving
you the option to learn how to read the music in the braille system. It's
like braille music with training wheels. You will find a brief audio
presentation demonstrating our access solution at:
http://www.dancingdots.com/prodesc/limealoud.htm
See the heading labeled:
Audio Presentation of Lime Aloud Available for Download
Alternatively, go to www.DancingDots.com and follow the "Presentations" link
and then select the Lime Aloud demo from the list.

Regards,
Bill McCann

Braille music is a must for students who want to be able to read and
interpret the composer's intent, rather than play in the same style as the
recording. There is a print book called "Piano for the Blind Child" and
three braille booklets that go with it called "Read, remember, and play". I
saw the braille ones listed at LOC recently, and a few years ago, they sent
us the print copy. However, they are not intended for the child to do
alone, and you need someone who can read braille. These books teach
beginning piano and braille music at the same time, in a logical way.
Braille music very systematic, but you do have to learn the system, the way
sighted kids learn to read notes.

Alyssa, I'm not the original person posting this question, but found your
post interesting, can you tell me how to access the audio music scores on
bard?
thanks
Heidi

Also, if you use bard provided by NLS, there are audio music scores. Here's
another thought. Is playing by ear an option? I play the piano, the violin,
and sing this way. I was exposed to Braille music but found it rather
tedious and a bit random. Many of the notes don't seem to follow any sort of
pattern. Just some thoughts.
