[blindkid] Braille music

Hi Pui and all,

I started learning Braille music at about Jack's age, using
Thelma Corless Dikeman's Braille Music for Piano Beginners. As I
progressed, I also relied on Bettye Krollick's How to Read
Braille Music, which was the standard Braille music reference
text, at least at that time. Finally, I'd definitely recommend
checking out the wealth of resources listed on
www.blindmusicstudent.org, the website of the National Resource
Center for Blind Musicians, run by my friend David Goldstein.

Hope this helps!

Lucy

That's a cool picture, love it! I'm assuming an iPad would also
work but it would only show a few measures. My son has a
degenerative eye disorder so it's important that he learns
braille music. My sighted nine year old practices until he
memorizes the pieces and so I expect the same from my youngest.
I would expect the braille notes/large print notes would be used
until it was memorized.

My son is VI and we use an old-fashioned projector and I copy
his music onto transparencies. He's quite competent in literary
Braille but given that he needs both hands to play the piano, I
didn't understand how he could read Braille music and play.
Here's a picture:

My VI 5 year old is going to be starting piano lessons in a few
weeks. Does anyone have recommendations on materials we could
start off with? He does have partial vision but it is not always
accurate and so I wanted him to start off learning music in
Braille as well. He has been learning Braille for a year now so
Braille is not new to him. I also know Braille and his sighted
brother has been playing piano for 4 years so we can work as a
family to encourage him.

 Thanks,
 Pui Burmahln
