[blindkid] Jaws training

Hi Traci,

Growing up, I did not get enough jaws or tech training and learned much on my own and as an adult via training paid for the department for the blind.
Its sad that tech is not taught automatically since sighted students get such training in schools in computer labs.

Anyway, having a blind adult teach her may be the best option.
If you have a lighthouse for the blind nearby, check there.

I also recommend the jaws webinars.
Also, here are a few keyboard commands to get help.

These work in all applications when jaws is running.

1. Jaws key is the insert key or zero key on your desktop keyboard.
Press jawskey plus H for help; gives you a list of jaws commands common to that program; press escape to exit that screen.

2. Jaws key plus f1 for program specific help.

3. Your kids will use Word and powerpoint a lot for school.
Much of the regular keystrokes could be used by a blind user.
For MS Office applications, pressing control key plus a letter performs an action. That letter is usually the first letter of the word; such as S equals save document.
Here are some common short cut key commands. Remember these are MS office commands so they will work with any screen reader or no screen reader.

Control O equals Open dialogue box to open a file.
Control P equals print document.
Control C equals copy text but you have to highlight it first.
Control x equals cut text.
Control v equals paste text.

Press Jawskey plus W to pull up a list of MS office commands and escape to exit the screen.

HTH,
Ashley
