Hi,

You've gotten some great suggestions on this list so I'll try not to repeat anythigng.

I'm not sure anyone recommended your daughter's college's career service office? They will sometimes let you post ads either online or on bulletin boards. I had some luck with that when I was in college.

Also, I got some of my best readers from my professor making job announcements in their classes. I preferred students who were in classes in levels higher than mine. For example, a reader for math or foreign language who was a semester or two ahead of me was best because they would already know the new material before they were expected to read it. This is harder to find as you get further in school, but for a first or second year student it's fairly easy.

Also, I would let your daughter know that working with a new reader is usually awkward at first. That early awkwardness often discourages young students from using readers. However, with practice and time to get to know one another, the experience gets much better.

HTH,
Allison

Subject: [blindkid] where to hire readers for college level students?

Hi -

My daughter is a college freshman and sometimes the material she has to read for class is online and her read aloud software doesn't always read the material properly.  So we would like to hire someone to read the material to her.  Have any of you hired a reader before?  Where did you find your readers?  Any suggestions on where my daughter and I should look for someone?

Thanks in advance for your advice on this.
Shellie Kalinsky

Hello,

Thank you for the tutorials. What is talking software? Also, is there a way
to obtain your files so I can download the video files on my computer. I am
doing a presentation next week, and I feel the Braille Display, and maybe
others,  may be good to present at the conference. Thanks. Anita

Yes, all lessons are available for download at yourtechvision.com
If you want to show the videos, just go to youtube and do an alt+d to the
URL and copy the link --ctrl c and paste--ctrl v - it in your notes then
click on it and open it to show audience
Yes, these lessons are great for sighted too but truly all the keyboard
commands enable blind and low vision to do all these skills also, so
talking software refers to Jaws, NVDA, window Eyes and anything else the
makes a computer talk. I specifically use Jaws and NVDA which serves every
purpose to go anywhere I need to go with a braille display.

Let me know if you have any more questions,
Denise
