Thank you for your question, here is some background:
Christopher is completely blind with autism. His public school years went well, but we have another calling in life, and that has been to travel and inspire people in their faith, encourage those who are challenged and also families with special needs children with our story and Christopher's singing. In April we had 8 events and traveled to four different states. It has been rewarding to especially see sighted children realize that being blind is not a bad thing and Christopher is just like them, and just does a few things "differently". We do not travel like this every month, usually just one or two events, but there is no "catching up" when we return and he can access his studies from where ever we are.
With that said, Christopher benefits from the travel and I have seen his socialization skills greatly increase. We visit museums and anything we can when we are in a state. It greatly adds to his comprehension. Comprehension is his biggest challenge. We take the subjects at his pace and we use different media (such as the DCMP). He is below grade level with this, but making steady improvement.
The on-line curriculum allows us to move at his pace and learn in a different way. It is pretty intensive for me, but I am seeing great benefits.
The full time on-line status will restore his technology, o&m and other services. It has never been done here, but then again, his elementary and middle school had never had a totally blind/autistic child.... so pioneering is part of my life!!
Thank you for asking and Happy Mother's Day to all the moms!!

Hi Christine I'm glad that you are choosing to homeschool your
son. I have
never heard of an online charter school before so I
can't help you with that
aspect of your post. What are the
advantages to homeschooling your son as
opposed to sending him to
a public school or a residential school for the
blind?
