thing,
though: You shouldn't need to actually print the document to run OCR on
it.
Does Kurzweil have a setting to let you open certain types of files? I
use my OCR software of choice (Abbyy Finereader) to access pdf's that do
not have imbedded text. I don't have to print the file; I just run  it
through the software. Saves a few trees (grin).

The only you can get a scanned document to read is to print it out and
rescan it using OCR software such as Kurzweil. I spend time educating my
clients however as to the format that I need documents in. As many of my
clients are nonprofits or public entities that serve various groups I
spend some time educating and acquainting them with web accessibility
standards and encourage them to use them when they design content.\
