To eachhis/her own, I suppose. This system doesn't involve much mre tan my laptop with earphone and braille display. All of the devices talk to each other without difficulty, The phone boots up quickly, and I can go for hours on end without 
needing to find an outlet.

Sounds like you had some unfortunat experiences in that regard. My school is surprisingly less competitive than I would have thought, so this has never been an issue. But very few instructors here would ban laptops anyway.
