Thanks for this info.  Like you, I might rely on simplicity, especially 
since I don't have the time to climb a big learning curve right now.  The 
letters and numbers that you type in the left margin... were you using 
Word's autoformatting feature?  Autoformatting seems like a powerful tool 
for outlining but I'm not as familiar with it as I would like.  A friend 
uses the "notebook" feature of her Word 2007 for Mac to create her outlines. 
It appears to be an autoformat setting, but I don't see it on my pc.  Does 
anyone know if there are multiple autoformats from which to choose, and if 
so, where in Word they are selected?
