About the Office: The United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Western District of Washington is responsible for representing the federal government in virtually all litigation involving the United States in the Western District of Washington. This includes criminal prosecutions for violations of federal law, civil lawsuits by and against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers. WDWA has an authorized strength of approximately 68 Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs). The USAO is divided into two litigating Divisions (Criminal and Civil). The USAO's main office is in Seattle, Washington, with a branch office located in Tacoma, Washington.

Position Responsibilities: Serves as the Executive Assistant United States Attorney (EAUSA) reporting to the United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington. The EAUSA will work closely with the United States Attorney on a variety of office initiatives, will work as part of the leadership team, and may perform supervisory duties. Other responsibilities may include speaking to a variety of audiences on matters relating to the office, and working with other components in the Department of Justice or with the Federal Courts on issues affecting the office. In addition, the EAUSA may be given primary responsibility for cases in either the Civil or Criminal Divisions.

Required Qualifications: The applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of a bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least three years post-J.D. experience. Ideal qualifications include at least five years post-J.D. litigation experience. The candidate must also possess superior oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, exhibit good judgment and function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. Appointment is subject to FBI background investigation, including credit, arrest, reference and drug use inquiries. U.S. citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Preferred applicant must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies. Thus, the ideal candidate has a positive history of working collaboratively both with colleagues, and with various interested parties. These would include community groups, victims, witnesses, client entities, courts, bar associations and law enforcement entities. The ideal candidate has significant trial experience in complex cases, including trial experience in both civil and criminal law.

Travel: Travel on occasion throughout the Western District of Washington may be required. Duty related travel outside the District may also be required. Travel is also required for training at the Department of Justice's National Advocacy Center, Columbia, South Carolina.

Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. The range of pay with locality is $123,439-155,400.

There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must include that information in their cover letter or resume and attach supporting documentation (e.g., the DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) to their submissions. Although the "point" system is not used, per se, applicants eligible to claim 10-point preference must submit Standard Form (SF) 15, Application for 10-Point Veteran Preference, and submit the supporting documentation required for the specific type of preference claimed (visit the OPM website, http://www.opm.gov/forms/pdf_fill/SF15.pdf for a copy of SF 15, which lists the types of 10point preferences and the required supporting documents). Applicants should note that SF 15 requires supporting documentation associated with service-connected disabilities or receipt of nonservice-connected disability pensions to be dated 1991 or later except in the case of service members submitting official statements or retirement orders from a branch of the Armed Forces showing that his or her retirement was due to a permanent service-connected disability or that he/she was transferred to the permanent disability retired list (the statement or retirement orders must indicate that the disability is 10% or more).
