Leadership Overview
The two major leadership objectives for this position are to institutionalize and facilitate the WSBA's (1) commitment to diversity and (2) continuing leadership in access to justice and public service related initiatives.  Both objectives are embodied in WSBA's Guiding Principles which include a commitment to operate a well-managed association that will advance and promote access to the justice system, diversity, equality, and cultural understanding throughout the legal community.  The position supervises three program managers representing Diversity, Justice Programs (Access to Justice Board), and Public Service programming.  The position will also staff the Council on Public Defense. This position will be a member of the WSBA executive leadership team with accompanying responsibilities and accountability.



Responsibilities

*         Manage operations in the Justice and Diversity Initiatives Department including budget management and staff supervision which includes hiring, firing, retention, coaching, training, performance evaluations, succession planning, etc.

*         Provide strategic vision, leadership, collaboration, and community-building on diversity issues to both internal and external parties (including direct supervision to the Diversity Program Manager and leadership on diversity related initiatives throughout the entire organization).

*         Provide leadership, strategy, and support to the Justice and Public Service Managers focused on WSBA's public service and access to justice related strategic goals and also in coordination with partners throughout the Alliance for Equal Justice.

*         Provide leadership and staffing to the Council on Public Defense.  Work closely with Council leadership to ensure focused and strategic work is progressing in accordance with BOG direction and budget.
Supervisory and management skills are essential.  There is a high public relations component to this job:  This position has high visibility and extensive front-line contact with many WSBA members, including the Board of Governors, Access to Justice Board and Committees, presidents and members of minority bar associations, their support staff, and also the public.  This position requires a strategic thinker who is able to make decisions independently, is able to work collaboratively, consistently exercises sound judgment, and is able to implement strategies to accomplish goals and tasks driven by the Board of Governors, WSBA leadership, and external partners.

Qualifications

*         Bachelors and J.D.

*         Experience managing and supervising staff to include staffing, managing performance and resolving performance related issues; coaching; motivating; leading; succession planning; developing departmental organizational structures;  and budgeting.

*         Experience working in a legal setting leading all or a major portion of diversity concerns.

*         Excellent communication skills, strong collaborative skills for team work and consensus building; and presentation skills.

*         Experience working with Boards and volunteers.

*         Preferred:  Experience working in an educational, governmental, non-profit, justice related, or civil legal service organizations.
