About the Office: The District of Wyoming encompasses a large and diverse geographical area of 97,914 square miles and a relatively small population of about 563,626. The United States Attorney's Office employs 20 Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs), four of whom are located in the Civil Division in the District's headquarters office in Cheyenne. Staffed branch offices are located in Casper, Lander and Yellowstone National Park. Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: One AUSA position is available in the Civil Division in our Cheyenne office. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of civil litigation involving the United States, both affirmative and defensive. Due to the small number of civil AUSAs employed in the District, each civil AUSA must handle a broad range of cases, including those involving torts, bankruptcy, environmental matters, health care fraud, employment discrimination, and challenges to federal agency actions, among others.

Qualifications: Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least one year of post-J.D. attorney experience. If the successful candidate is not a member of the Wyoming State Bar and is not eligible to become a member of the Bar through reciprocity, he or she will be expected to favorably complete the Wyoming Bar Examination at the next available opportunity.

Preferred qualifications: Applicants should possess superior oral and written communication skills and should demonstrate incisive analytical ability, excellent judgment and effective trial advocacy. Applicants must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies.

Travel: Travel within and outside of the District will be required.

Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The salary range for this position is $44,581 to $131,534, plus locality pay for the "Rest of United States" area (currently 14.16%).

A candidate should not expect to be appointed at the higher end of the salary range unless he or she possesses very strong qualifications and substantial experience.

Location: The duty station is Cheyenne. Cheyenne is the capital city of Wyoming and is located 45 miles east of Laramie, Wyoming, 50 miles north of Fort Collins, Colorado and 100 miles north of Denver, Colorado.

Relocation Expenses:Relocation expenses are not authorized.

Department Policies: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed. See 28 U.S.C. § 545 for district-specific information.

There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must include that information in their cover letter or resume and attach supporting documentation (e.g., the DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) to their submissions. Although the "point" system is not used, per se, applicants eligible to claim 10-point preference must submit Standard Form (SF) 15, Application for 10-Point Veteran Preference, and submit the supporting documentation required for the specific type of preference claimed (visit the OPM website, http://www.opm.gov/forms/pdf_fill/SF15.pdf for a copy of SF-15, which lists the types of 10-point preferences and the required supporting documents). Applicants should note that the SF-15 requires supporting documentation associated with service-connected disabilities or receipt of non-service-connected disability pensions to be dated 1991 or later except in the case of service members submitting official statements or retirement orders from a branch of the Armed Forces showing that his or her retirement was due to a permanent service-connected disability or that he/she was transferred to the permanent disability retired list (the statement or retirement orders must indicate that the disability is 10% or more).
