Job Description
"Guidance, Solutions, Integrity" describes the Legal Team's approach to
providing responsive legal guidance supporting the implementation of the
foundation's strategies. The Legal Team offers creative solutions that
accomplish programmatic objectives, develops and implements efficient legal
processes to streamline the foundation's grantmaking and contracting
practices, and applies preventive legal strategies and compliance policies
to minimize risks and safeguard the foundation's reputation. 
. Provide employment law advice and counsel to Human Resources, people
managers and internal client groups to understand business objectives,
develop creative solutions, and resolve issues using the legal framework and
the foundation's Values.    
. Provide practical daily legal advice and counsel to the foundation on a
full range of employment actions - recruiting, hiring, training, performance
management, compensation, benefits, and terminations under local, state,
federal, and varied foreign country employment laws.  Manage outside counsel
as needed.
. Counsel HR in managing employee relations issues to ensure consistency in
the foundation's application and adherence to a legal framework.
. Review and monitor implementation of procedures regarding employee and
others' background checks.
. Work with outside counsel to ensure compliance with immigration laws and
to oversee visa application process.
. Provide legal advice on foundation compliance with wage and hour laws,
status of independent contractors, and other employment regulations.
. Examine and evaluate existing and proposed policies and plans for
compliance with relevant employment laws, identify risks that might exist,
suggest approaches to address the legal risks and ensure legal compliance
while finding solutions to achieve strategic objectives.
. Review, develop, and present written materials and appropriate training
for HR, managers, and employees, including advising on and assuring
compliance with employment law requirements.
. Advise HR on investigations and coordinate and collaborate with other
areas within the foundation to resolve issues and manage exposure.
. Provide legal support in employment disputes and claims.
. Provide support in other legal matters or foundation policies and issues
as needed.
. Provide leadership through example on the confidentiality of personnel
matters.
. This position does not have direct managerial oversight of any other
employee, but must be able to lead and participate in  cross-functional
teams throughout the foundation, including collaboration with employees in
other areas with whom there is no reporting relationship.
Desired Skills & Experience
. A minimum of 10 years experience as a practicing advice and litigation
employment lawyer with deep subject matter expertise in all aspects of
federal, state and local employment law, and ideally with some immigration
and employee benefits law experience preferred.
. Experience advising a U.S.-based global organization a plus.
. Proficient understanding and application of the Rules of Professional
Conduct relating to employment issues.
. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills, and personal
judgment.
. Practical solution orientation, with ability to discuss material and
complex matters with clients and serve as an effective liaison between the
Legal Team and internal client groups.
. Must be a team player, with the ability to develop and utilize
collaborative relationships.
. Able to handle and prioritize multiple responsibilities simultaneously and
still meet high quality and timeliness standards.
. Courage to deliver appropriate advice and to gracefully accept and support
business risk decisions.
. Handle tasks efficiently under pressure, including when circumstances
dictate a sense of urgency.
. Willingness and ability to "roll up sleeves".
. Ability to work with flexibility, efficiency, enthusiasm, and diplomacy
both individually and as part of a team effort.
. Demonstrated passion for the foundation's Values with commitment to
deliver results against the foundation's mission.
. History of effectively servicing highly skilled and demanding client base,
establishing a role as an advisor on ground-breaking, emerging legal issues
in a complex, fast-paced environment.
. Computer proficiency and ability to work independently with minimal
supporting staff.
. Sense of humor.
