Starting Salary Range:  $68,779 - $76,000/year DOE + benefits

This highly visible position is one of two positions that specialize in law practice management advising, most particularly for the solo and small-firm practitioner.  This position serves as an advisor, consultant, and educator on best practices for running a law office; maintains and provides related resources; conducts confidential reviews; and provides educational programming around the many facets of law office administration, including but not limited to planning, financial management, review and development of membership benefit options, technology, office facilities, staff management, client relations and marketing, ethics, workflow, and case/matter management.  The position is intended to educate lawyers so that they avoid mistakes that can lead to grievances and malpractice claims.  While niche areas of special focus may evolve over time, it is expected that this position will have a broad capacity to advise on law practice management issues that arise at all stages of an attorney's professional life, from admission to the Bar through the winding down of a practice and retirement.

This position is expected to develop and maintain a close connection with new and young lawyers, as well as to other lawyers in various types and stages of practice transitions, connecting transitioning lawyers with resources in LOMAP, WSBA in general, and elsewhere, in order to meet their professional and practice management needs.


This position provides consultations by phone, email, online meetings, or in person, concerning a broad range of law firm operational and management issues, including workflow management, the use of technology, ethics implications, general office administration and client relations; makes available educational/outreach programs around the state through a combination of electronic media (webinars, website resources, videos, etc) and on-site presentations;  maintains and increases personal knowledge, through articles and other resources, on best practices and new technology for law office management (with an eye to making these resources available to the membership through the LOMAP and WSBA website); seeks out, maintains, and constantly increases knowledge of and connections with other departments, staff, and programs within the WSBA in order to make all of these resources known to the membership; develops and maintains contacts with ABA-LPM, ABA GP/Solo, and ALA and other Practice Management Advisors and resources in Washington and in other states; develops and maintains a network of consultants and service providers throughout the state who can assist members when assistance through the LOMAP advisors is not preferred or feasible; develops relationships with local, county and specialty ("L/C/S") bar association leadership throughout the state in order to understand the challenges WSBA members face in their practices; identifies services and resources that the WSBA and others provide (including LOMAP services) that can help members meet their professional practice management needs; and develops and maintains LOMAP services (by working with the other LOMAP Advisor, PR Counsel, LOMAP and OGC staff and lawyers, and other WSBA staff).


Education:  Bachelor's or equivalent experience.  Preferred:  Bachelor's degree and master's degree in business subjects and appropriate certificates in technology; Bachelor's degree and J.D.; and/or Certified Legal Manager (CLM) certification.

Requirements: Minimum of five years in law office management.  Minimum of five years in   one or more multi-department organizations,  developing comprehensive, integrated understanding of the products and services offered by each department in the organization and connecting outside individuals with the products and services most responsive to their needs.

Highly qualified candidates will have 10 or more years of law office management and teaching experience in related topics and consultative work with solo and small law firms.

Proficiencies: Excellent communication, relationship-building, networking, diplomacy, analysis, counseling, instruction, technology, time management, organization, and public speaking skills are essential when assisting lawyers. Current and in-depth knowledge must be maintained as to applicable software, office equipment, and current legal industry trends as well as the obvious practice-management areas of finance, marketing, accounting, personnel, insurance, facilities, and technology.  Ability to think strategically, plan, and execute initiatives; familiarity with board and committee structures and operations;  ability to work effectively with volunteers;  ability to communicate in an unbiased and informative way to move a group forward in action; ability to foster engagement with different business units;  budgeting literacy;  ability to follow and design on-the-fly business processes and meeting procedures;  ability to anticipate next steps, take initiative, exercise sound judgment, and work well independently and as a member of the team;  ability to travel throughout the state two to three times per month for meetings and presentations to groups;  and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ability to lift up to 50 lbs is an occasional requirement for this position.

Highly Qualified candidates will have in-depth knowledge of meeting management, group facilitation, graphic arts, website design, advertising and career counseling.
