Gary-

Thank you for sharing this link.

MDOD continues to work closely with MEMA, DHR (sheltering), DHMH (Health Needs), Aging and other state agencies to address needs of people with disabilities in emergencies. We also partner with the Centers for independent living and other stakeholders to stay in contact in such circumstances. The Department is actively engaged in planning, training and exercises, and response when the State Emergency Operations Center is activated.

I would also encourage you and your contacts to also build on local networks as many decisions and actions are local in nature.

Colleagues:

Marcie Roth, Director of FEMA’s Office of Disability Integration and Coordination, would like to share the link to CNN.com<http://CNN.com> below with you all regarding a largely overlooked report issued this month.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction found that the crucial needs of about 1 billion people living with physical and mental disabilities around the world are not woven into the disaster planning and emergency response plans of governments and civil society groups.

I worked with the Maryland Department of Disabilities in the past on this issue. Notably, there is a need to restart policy work from a disability focus on the access of people with disabilities to emergency preparedness, response, and mitigation; this is especially in light of the recently enacted federal legislation requiring accessible notifications.

A stakeholder community dialogue, facilitated by the Mid-Atlantic Lyceum, might be convened.
