For more than 93 years, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU)
has been at the forefront of virtually every major battle for civil
liberties and equal justice in this country. Principled and nonpartisan, the
ACLU has offices in all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and
brings together the country's largest team of public interest lawyers,
lobbyists, communication strategists, and members and activists in the
advancement of equality, fairness, and freedom, especially for the most
vulnerable in our society. 

The Washington Legislative Office (WLO) of the ACLU seeks applicants for
legal interns for the Summer of 2014 in Washington, D.C.

 

OVERVIEW

 

Founded in 1952, the Washington National Office is responsible for advancing
the civil liberties agenda of the national organization before Congress and
the Executive Branch, as well as working with ACLU affiliates on state
legislatures. 

 

The Summer Legal Internship requires a 10-12 week commitment and is
full-time. Students are highly encouraged to seek Public Interest Fellowship
funds for the internship.  Arrangements can be made for work/study or course
credit.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Legal interns will have the opportunity to work on a variety of issues.
Working closely with the Lobbyists, whose area of focus matches a specific
civil liberties issue area, interns will gain exposure to all aspects of
litigation and legislative/policy work including:

 

*	Researching civil liberties implications of legislative proposals
and track related legislation. 
*	Working with attorneys to draft testimony for Congressional
hearings. 
*	Attending hearings and preparing written reports. 
*	Attending coalition meetings as necessary with the lead lobbyist. 
*	Researching and drafting issue statements for posting on the ACLU's
web site, in newsletters and action alerts. 
*	Other projects as assigned. 

 

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

The internship is open to all second and third year law students who have
completed coursework in constitutional law and possess:

*	Excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills. 
*	The ability to work independently, a high degree of motivation and
the initiative to see projects through to completion. 
*	An understanding of constitutional law & legal research. 
*	A commitment to civil liberties and a demonstrated interest in a
specific area of legislation.
