[blindlaw] Re MS operating systems in federal agencies

Windows 7 works fine for me. It is Office 2010 and 2013 that I find problems with but usually can work out.

Hi Noel:
When you say Windows 7 works well with jaws "mostly", can you define what
"mostly" means?
I say that with a bit of a grin, being a long time, battle-scarred jaws
computer user.
Do you have any issues with it for mainstream programs that most of us use
in practice, such as MS outlook etc., or do you have problems withfederal
agency specific things that we, out here, don't have regular contact with?
I'd like to know because as of next month Microsoft ceases to support
Windows XP, and I have two XP machines.
So, at some point I'm going to have to get at least windows 7.
Ross

The new Schedule A process allows for certification of a disability from
several sources. I suggest you look at the OPM website.

Also, my federal agency in Seattle uses Windows 7 at this time and it is
fine with JAWS, mostly.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. The follow-up question I have then is
this:

I've been using Windows XP for years, and also an iPhone and iPad with
VoiceOver, as well as a MacBook Pro. I bought the Mac because I'd heard
that Windows 7 was fazing out and that Windows 8 was lousy. I've looked all
over Seattle for Windows 7 instruction--DSB, Seattle Public Library's Access
unit, Community Services for the Blind, the Lighthouse, and a local
community college. They all tell me that no classes or instruction are
offered. I want to get a job readiness certificate to qualify for Section A
eligibility for federal employment. I'm actively licensed and have years of
legal experience.

Am I "ready" for federal employment without Windows 7 (granted I need it),
and can I get a job readiness certificate without becoming a rehabilitation
client?

Thanks.

Elizabeth Rene
