Hi Ann, this is Helga. I think your daughter should be allow more time than
just double time and that she also will need to have a reader for her test
questions. In fact, I also think that she also needs to have a reader to
read her the reading stories of the test as well since she could get tired
in going back and forth in order to find a specific answer to the question.
And when I say have areader to the stories, I mean she can telll the reader
the parragraph where the answer of the questions could be since she read the
story with her CCTV. You need to fight for her rights!! Have you tried to
meet with the Principal of the school, her vision teacher, and the person
in charge of the test and talk to them regarding this issue and letting them
know that she really needs these accommodations in order to succeed in the
test? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks and God bless!

Subject: [blindlaw] New York Testing Accommodations

I am wondering if anyone has experience in testing accomodations for
visually impaired school-aged children. I have a visually-impaired daughter.
She is also dyslexic. She is getting double time and will be able to use her
CCTV during the Common-Core ELA test. Someone suggested that she should be
given a reader (to read the questions at least).
She has to read LONG passages, read the questions and often times it is
required to go back to the passage and find specific details in order to
answer the questions. Even at double time - this is most difficult for
someone with a visual impairment on top of dyslexia.
No one I speak to seems to know anything (including her vision teacher from
the Department of Vision Services). Does anyone on this list have any ideas?
The test is next week so this is urgent.

Thank you.

Ann
