Hi Ann:
I have not heard of the organization that Sy recommended, but I think you
should call them. I'd like to know if they are helpful. You can contact me
off list at this address.

Hi Ann,

If the people you normally talk to about this are unclear about who decides
whether your daughter should get a reader (which I think she absolutely
should), I would call Advocates for Children. That is, assuming your
daughter is in an NYC school. I suggest them because in NYC schools, it is
often quite difficult to figure out who the right person to talk to about
these things is, and AFC has a lot of experience with figuring out where to
go. They're a non-profit that assists students with disabilities by
protecting their right to a free and appropriate public education.

Their office is pretty close to Sidley actually, so it wouldn't be hard to
go talk to them in person. But their help line number is 866-427-6033. Call
tomorrow between 10 and 4. The help line isn't open on Fridays.

I am wondering if anyone has experience in testing accomodations for
visually impaired school-aged children. I have a visually-impaired daughter.
She is also dyslexic. She is getting double time and will be able to use her
CCTV during the Common-Core ELA test. Someone suggested that she should be
given a reader (to read the questions at least).
She has to read LONG passages, read the questions and often times it is
required to go back to the passage and find specific details in order to
answer the questions. Even at double time - this is most difficult for
someone with a visual impairment on top of dyslexia.
No one I speak to seems to know anything (including her vision teacher from
the Department of Vision Services). Does anyone on this list have any ideas?
The test is next week so this is urgent.

Thank you.

Ann
