Laura,

There is also a way to pick a paste function  without formatting by using key command control shift v and selecting your choice from the pop-up.  I almost always use this to ensure what I paste adopts the currently active formatting.  This may not work in certain email drafting modes.

Do you mean that you use words automatic numbering feature when you
are done editing a list or that you re-number everything yourself when
you are done editing?
