[blindLaw] Zoom mediations

Thanks Nikki, that's great information. I will definitely look into WebEx. I did a conference call today and an oral argument last week using the WebEx audio, and it was fine. With all the security issues I might well keep on mediating by phone, though that can be pretty cumbersome. I did settle a case that way earlier this month. Have a great weekend.

Subject: Re: [blindLaw] Zoom mediations

Hi Brian,

Zoom is not a good platform to maintain privilege or confidentiality. We are not allowed to use it for this reason at my firm. Now, that being said, I understand that there is an enterprise version of Zoom that handles confidentiality in a more robust way. I have not used Zoom enterprise, so I do not much know more than that.

WebEx has better security, and I am right now trying to assess how well its other non-audio features work with JAWS. Incidentally, WebEx may be a good soft phone alternative, which I believe you raised in a prior email.

Another platform that has been getting more traction is Microsoft Teams, which is better than Zoom but not as good as WebEx. It may be comparable to Skype for security purposes. I am not a cyber security professional, so my response is informed by my firm's policy on virtual conferencing applications.

The other thing to keep in mind is that all these applications may behave differently (or not at all) when it comes to using them due to the technical capabilities of the other participants, your internet signal, or your firm's VPN. It can get complicated. For instance, we recently completed a witness interview with a combination of Skype and WebEx. Skype handled the audio communication and WebEx the documents, even though WebEx is supposed to be an all-in-one application.

Regards,
Nikki

[EXTERNAL]

Does anyone have experience acting as mediator on a Zoom mediation? If so, could you offer some tips or tricks either on or off list? I have had several inquiries as to whether I would offer that service, but have only participated on Zoom as an invitee, not as a host, and especially not where I am responsible for protecting the confidentiality of the proceedings. Thanks in advance.
