The Department of Justice reviewed the St. Louis Board's voting program for compliance with the ADA. The department identified architectural barriers at St. Louis polling places, including inaccessible parking, ramps that were too steep, stairs at the only entrance or route to the voting area, and doorways with thresholds that were too high. The department also identified that the St. Louis Board fails to provide accessible curbside voting and auxiliary aids and services, including headphones for some accessible voting machines, and also fails to provide voters with disabilities the same amount of privacy and independence while voting as voters without disabilities. Under the ADA, governmental entities that conduct local, state, or federal elections may not select polling places that are inaccessible to individuals with disabilities for use during elections, and they must make reasonable modifications to ensure equal opportunity to participate in voting programs. "The department remains committed through its ADA Voting Initiative to ensuring that every eligible voter with a disability has an equal opportunity to participate in the voting programs of public entities," said Acting Assistant Attorney General John Daukas for the Civil Rights Division. "This settlement ensures that eligible voters with disabilities in the City of St. Louis will be able to exercise their fundamental right to vote and participate in our democracy." Under the terms of the settlement agreement, the St. Louis Board will begin remediating its voting program. To make its selected polling places accessible, the St. Louis Board will employ temporary measures, such as portable ramps, signage, and propped open doors. In addition, the St. Louis Board will train its poll workers and other elections staff on the requirements of the ADA and how to use temporary measures to ensure each polling place is accessible during elections. The St. Louis Board will also survey polling locations for accessibility and maintain the accessibility of each polling place it uses on election days. When selecting future polling places, the agreement requires the St. Louis Board to select locations that will be accessible during elections. This settlement is part of the department's ADA Voting Initiative, which focuses on protecting the voting rights of individuals with disabilities. A hallmark of the ADA Voting Initiative is its collaboration with jurisdictions to increase accessibility at polling places. Through this Initiative, the Department of Justice has surveyed more than 2,300 polling places and increased polling place accessibility in more than 50 jurisdictions, including Sandoval County, New Mexico; Harris County, Texas; Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania; and Anderson County, South Carolina. For more information about the ADA and today's agreement, please visit http://www.ada.gov or call the toll-free ADA Information Line at (800) 514-0301 or (800) 514-0383 (TTY). It does not have a QWERTY keyboard. It is essentially a braille display with a Victor reader built-in. You can access BookShare, newsline, NLS BARD, etc. It has Bluetooth five and built-in speakers. https://store.humanware.com/hus/brailliant-bi-40x-braille-display.html Tai Tomasi, J.D., M.P.A. It works well with my Lenovo laptop and my iPad. It has a braille keyboard, not qwerty, an SD card for storing notes and books in BRF format, accessed through the onboard Scratchpad utility. It does not have audio output. I find it useful as a standalone notetaker when I am conducting mediations as it lets me keep notes of the offers, counteroffers, and other information conveyed to me by the parties, and I don't have to lug a laptop between mediation rooms. The same goes for argument notes for court appearances. Brian Brian C. I practice criminal law and I have successfully handled jury trials, but voire dire is always a bit difficult for me even though I have other lawyers assist since they pick up on the non-verbal cues. I am relatively new to braille and I am not proficient yet. Does this allow using Grade 1 braille? Also, am I correct in thinking this one is fairly large to bring to court along with your laptop? Until now I have always used just a laptop using jaws, but I cannot get a blue tooth ear pod that works well with my Lenovo windows laptop. I want something I can do voir dire with which also requires using power point. Will this braille display work with power point and adobe? I have never typed using braille keys either. What would you guys suggest? I do like the idea of not having the screen in front of me especially if I am cross examining a witness or doing voir dire Thanks so much! I think that is a feature that is coming in a later software release. As for working with Windows 10, it should work fine. I am not sure about the need for drivers though. I know my Apex, which is older technology, did not need extra drivers, so I imagine that is likely true for the Brailliant. -----Original Message----- From: BlindLaw On Behalf Of Shannon via BlindLaw Sent: Monday, January 25, 2021 4:47 PM To: 'Blind Law Mailing List' Cc: Shannon Subject: Re: [blindLaw] Reccomendations for Braille display for use with LeNovo laptop [EXTERNAL] Does the Braillient have audio out put? On Behalf Of Rovner, Laura Sent: Thursday, January 28, 2021 5:25 PM To: main at coloradopela.groups.io Subject: [coloradopela] Position Announcement - Grad. Teaching Fellowship in DU Law's Civil Rights Clinic Friends, I’m writing to spread the word that DU College of Law is searching for a Graduate Clinical Teaching Fellow in our Civil Rights Clinic. The position announcement is below. Feel free to reach out to me off-list with any questions about the fellowship. And please share widely! Thanks, Laura ****************************** UNIVERSITY OF DENVER COLLEGE OF LAW Student Law Office | Clinical Teaching Graduate Fellowship Program – Civil Rights Clinic The University of Denver College of Law is now accepting applications for a clinical teaching fellow in its Civil Rights Clinic (CRC). The CRC focuses on the intersection between civil rights and the criminal justice system, primarily through providing legal representation to incarcerated people in impact litigation challenging unconstitutional prison conditions. Denver Law’s Master of Laws (LLM) Clinical Teaching Fellowship Program offers attorneys the opportunity to gain extensive practice in law school clinical teaching under the supervision of experienced clinical faculty. Graduate fellows also learn about academic legal scholarship and, with the assistance of a faculty mentor, produce publishable-quality scholarship during their residence. Fellows receive an annual stipend and are awarded an LLM upon their successful completion of the fellowship. It is the explicit goal of the fellowship to prepare fellows for a career in clinical teaching. Fellows enroll in a three-year program during which they are in residence at one of Denver Law’s in-house clinics. The fellowship will commence no later than March 15, 2021, though earlier is preferable. Fellows directly supervise J.D. students enrolled in our clinics, first as co-supervisors with clinic faculty and then on their own. Fellows also assist in teaching clinic seminars and perform work on their own client matters. Additionally, fellows enroll in a clinical pedagogy seminar and other activities designed to support an interest in clinical teaching and legal education. In addition to the above requirements, to complete the degree, the fellow must write a law review article of publishable quality. Clinical Fellows receive an annual stipend of $50,000, health and dental benefits, a waiver of all tuition and fees in the LLM program, and a travel budget for conferences. As full-time students, teaching fellows also may qualify for deferment of their student loans. In addition, teaching fellows may be eligible for loan repayment assistance from their law schools. Fellows are integrated into the intellectual life of the law school and the larger University. They are invited to attend faculty workshops and participate in mentoring sessions. Qualifications: J.D. or equivalent; minimum 3 years of practice experience in federal litigation (ideally civil rights litigation); excellent written and oral communication skills; strong interest in clinical teaching. Fellows must be members of the Colorado Bar or willing to petition for admission prior to the start date of the fellowship (Colorado permits lawyers teaching in a clinical program to waive into the Bar). How to apply: To apply for the fellowship, please email the following application materials to Laurie Saraceno at lsaraceno at law.du.edu and use ā€œLLM Applicationā€ as the subject line: * Resume & list of references; * Statement of interest of no more than two pages. The statement should address a) why you are interested in this fellowship; b) what you can contribute to the clinic; c) your experience with the area(s) of law in which the clinic practices and with public interest/social justice work; d) your professional or career goals for the next five or ten years; and e) anything else you consider pertinent; * A writing sample that represents recent, challenging legal work. The writing sample should not be a collaborative work or a document significantly edited by someone else. Deadline: The application deadline is February 15, 2021, though applications will be considered on a rolling basis. The University of Denver is committed to enhancing the diversity of its faculty and staff and encourages applications from women, minorities, members of the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities and veterans. The University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. -- Laura Rovner (she/her/hers) Professor of Law & Director, Civil Rights Clinic University of Denver College of Law 2255 E.
