Essential Worker Fellowship
Seattle University School of Law, the Latina/o Bar Association of Washington, the Loren Miller Bar Association, and the Asian Bar Association of Washington have partnered together with the Unemployment Law Project (ULP) to fund a recent Seattle U law graduate to work full-time as the Essential Worker Fellow at the ULP for one year, starting in the summer of 2021. The ULP is a statewide non-profit law firm established to advise and represent unemployed workers.
COVID-19 is devastating communities of color. Workers are often forced to work in unsafe conditions. Many are being denied unemployment benefits. The Fellow will connect food service workers and others in the food industry to legal services. Based in Seattle, the Fellow will provide advice and direct representation to food service workers who have been denied unemployment benefits.
The Fellowship will provide a $60,000 salary, medical benefits, paid vacation/sick time leave, paid holidays, student loan repayment, time off during bar exam, bar dues, and CLE support. This opportunity is open to recent Seattle U Law graduates within the last 3 years (Class of 2019, 2020 and 2021).
APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE:
· Interest or experience in labor/employment law, public benefits, and/or admin law
· Commitment to public interest and social justice
· Strong oral and written advocacy skills
· Experience with community outreach, education, and organizing
· Cross cultural competence
· Commitment to strictly follow COVID-19 safety guidelines
· Bar passage or ability to sit for the next bar exam
· Proficiency in another language is a plus
Applicants should submit letter of interest, transcript, resume, and writing sample by June 1, 2021 to Abby Goldy at goldyabigail at seattleu.edu<mailto:goldyabigail at seattleu.edu>.
