[blindLaw] Pointers for dealing with a very bulky file

Hi Karla. Thank you for your suggestions.

First, I did try to open this document in word. This I did by right clicking it, going into open with and then selecting word. However, the error that I got was to the effect that the document was more than 512 MB. And hence could not be opened in word. This document was 529 MB.

Second, I do have a subscription to acrobat pro through my office. I have not yet played around with it. I will devote about 30 minutes to understanding how it works today. And then I can possibly convert such large files into word and open them on that basis.

Third, the only downside that I see to doing that is the following. The PDF has bookmarks that point out the relevant material that it contains. These bookmarks can be viewed by going into the bookmark viewer in adobe. And then all you need to do is to press enter on the relevant judgment or policy, and you will land at the start of that relevant piece of information. I am wondering if these bookmarks remain intact even when the PDF is opened in word. Do you have any information about this? Without the bookmarks, it would be very difficult to find one‘s way in such a large document.

Finally, what I did yesterday was to open the document in Adobe reader, opt for single page view and get to the relevant pieces of information through bookmarks. I was not told by my colleagues that the PDF actually had bookmarks. But when I looked into this issue, I realize that it did.

Warmly, Rahul

Hi Rahul,

Do you have Adobe Pro, or another program that will convert the pdf to Word? I typically use this to make the document editable and then mark it up with my own comments. It is also possible to add "sticky notes" or comments directly in the pdf, which may be an easier way to make notes readable by the people you are briefing, but I find navigating within a document and finding my place again much easier in Word which is why I tend to convert large pdfs to this form so I can work with the content more easily.

Good afternoon,

I am a practicing attorney in New Delhi, India. Today, I am facing the following difficulty in my work. I am part of a legal team that is briefing 2 senior councils who are scheduled to appear in the Delhi High Court in a matter on Monday. We have to brief them on the basis of what is called a convenience compilation in litigation circles in India. A convenience compilation is a document that contains all the material that is relevant for the hearing.

This convenience compilation is 1093 pages. It is a PDF. It contains relevant judgments and policies. Do you have any thoughts as to what methods I might use to be able to deal with a file of this size?

Warmly, Rahul
