[blindLaw] Importance of Dissenting Opinions?

Hello fellow legal beagles!

I have been hearing a lot about justice this or justice that being the “dissenting opinion” on a Supreme Court decision and wonder why those are even important to have if it is the DISSENTING opinion, as in the one that does not agree with the majority decision if it will not influence it at all? I mean I can see it as being there because of tradition and what not but does it have any actual judicial weight behind it or is it just there for show?

Thanks for your input!
Tom
