Hello everyone,

I'm a digital accessibility specialist and attorney at Thomson Reuters.
I'd like to give you all a little more information about this Westlaw
question.

First of all, we recently released a button on both Westlaw and Westlaw
Edge that allows people to copy the full citation for a case to their
clipboard. The accessible name of the button in Edge is "Copy document
citation to Clipboard." If you haven't used the button yet, it might be in
a different technical state, and have the accessible name "Copy menu." I'm
not sure because I've changed my default. The button also contains a
dropdown that gives you the option of copying either the case citation or
the URL for the document. Upon selecting one of the options, it becomes
your default.

Second, I want you to know that everyone who has communicated with us
regarding the Copy with Reference frustration was heard. I'd like to tell
you what we've done so far. A while ago we spent months researching how to
resolve this. How Copy with Reference works is that when someone using a
mouse selects text, a popup is automatically generated when a user stops
highlighting text with their mouse and releases the left mouse button.

As you probably know, when JAWS is used, most actions like this have taken
place only inside the JAWS buffer, and that action doesn't get
communicated out past the JAWS buffer. So while you can highlight text
with JAWS using the keyboard, that selection doesn't move out from the
JAWS buffer and get communicated to the browser. This matters because
without the message moving to the browser, the popup is never triggered.
We worked through many possible solutions, but ultimately could not get
past the security issue that we created by opening the clipboard to the
browser. We reported this issue to the Clipboard spec team with the World
Wide Web Consortium ("W3C") and logged a bug with them because we felt the
clipboard spec should address this security breach. We also reported this
to Freedom Scientific. Ultimately, and to our frustration, the technology
did not support a solution.

Recently JAWS released some new functionality that may be a game-changer
for us and may allow us to resolve the Copy with Reference issue. We are
again investigating to see whether technology will support delivering the
popup without using a mouse.

Please continue reaching out to us with questions, comments, complaints,
or anything on your mind about accessibility. We are committed to being
inclusive and accessible. You can use westaccessibility@thomsonreuters.com
to email us any time. I'm in that email group as well as the Reference
Attorneys mentioned in the chain below. We love hearing from customers and
value your insights and input enormously.

Thank you for reading through this long post!

Is there an accessibility guide outlining these and other topics?

>
> Dear Westlaw,
>
> I hope you are well.
>
> I am glad to see that a new update to Westlaw is now available.
>
> DO you know if
> (1) there is a guide on how to use it with screenreaders such as JAWS;
>
> (2) if the accessibility issues I mentioned over the past few years
> were fixed; and
>
> (3) specifically, how to copy a quote with its case and pin citation,
> as I still do not know how to do so with JAWS on WestLaw, an issue I
> rpeorted years ago.
>
> I hoped this issue
> would at least be addressed in the new update. Perhaps it is fixed and
> I just do not yet know?
>
> I tried to do so, but could not find a way.
> Again, it would be helpful to have a screenreader guide to using
Westlaw.

Hi Seif,

On copying language with reference, this does not work with JAWS. I
understand that someone on this list found a way by using JAWS' multiple
cursors, but the method remains cumbersome and likely unintuitive. I know
a number of us have repeatedly asked Westlaw to fix this aspect of the
platform. It would be such a great feature to have work with screen
readers. I am not sure what is the roadblock, whether a technological
shortcoming or bandwidth of the Westlaw developers. Ideally, JAWS coders
and Westlaw developers would work on this aspect together to find a
solution. I do use the ?copy citation? button located on any page of a
legal reference to do exactly that, and I find that this does save me some
time.

On the lack of an accessibility guide, that may be correct, though
understandably annoying. I am not aware of a JAWS guide to Westlaw. I
learned how to use Westlaw like my sighted peers. After an initial
training, I played around on the platform. For things I could not quite
figure out, I contacted the reference attorneys, including the ones who
are knowledgeable about the operation of JAWS. Aside for the litigation
analytics tool, which is something I have never had to use, Westlaw is
pretty accessible.

Regards,
Nikki

> Hi Seif,
>
> On copying language with reference, this does not work with JAWS. I
> understand that someone on this list found a way by using JAWS'
> multiple cursors, but the method remains cumbersome and likely
> unintuitive. I know a number of us have repeatedly asked Westlaw to
> fix this aspect of the platform. It would be such a great feature to
have work with screen readers.
> I am not sure what is the roadblock, whether a technological
> shortcoming or bandwidth of the Westlaw developers. Ideally, JAWS
> coders and Westlaw developers would work on this aspect together to
> find a solution. I do use the ?copy citation? button located on any
> page of a legal reference to do exactly that, and I find that this does
save me some time.
>
> On the lack of an accessibility guide, that may be correct, though
> understandably annoying. I am not aware of a JAWS guide to Westlaw. I
> learned how to use Westlaw like my sighted peers. After an initial
> training, I played around on the platform. For things I could not
> quite figure out, I contacted the reference attorneys, including the
> ones who are knowledgeable about the operation of JAWS. Aside for the
> litigation analytics tool, which is something I have never had to use,
Westlaw is pretty accessible.

>
>
> There is not an option to for JAWS to Copy with Reference - copy the

>
> The Copy Cite option is what is available with JAWS - I will pass
> along as feedback the request for Copy with Reference with JAWS. We

>
>> On Westlaw Edge the JAWS commands of Insert F5, F6, F7 for example

>> will work to navigate on the page. If you are in a case document you

>> can do "insert F5" and then go to "Copy document citation to
