If so, how many hours and what is the usual rate? I plan to check with the library to see if they have someone on staff that can provide this assistance. Any opinions, advices, tip, etc. is greatly appreciated!

I did my undergrad in comp sci and finance at Yale University 1998 to 2002.
I am fully blind.
I used about 15 to 20 hours a week for readers, and then the hourly
rate, I know, was $20, but the readers/mentors were masters or PHD
students in either the discipline itself or at least in a scientific
study. Undergrand readers were helpers for some of the 4 years and they
got paid marginally less, but were a lot less effective.
The job duties are similar to what has already been mentioned.
For any practical things, getting around/errands type stuff I think the
policy is more institution specific and if you agree to providing help
in that area that should be a separate person at much lower rate, I
believe, though I do not know for sure, it is much closer to minimum
rate, may be $9/hour, or it was in 2000.
I had excellent screen reader skills and ppicked up math and science
quickly, but I was not familiar with Nemeth and other math and science
software that will enable better access and more independence for the
student, though it may take some work to prepare the material in a
suitable format.
I can write you off list about ideas, or even onlist.
I hope this helps some .. I do not believe any pay information I am
giving is a private matter since it was discussed freely on campus, but
if it is illegal or unethical to name figures I do apologize and I won´t
make that mistake again (I am from Europe and never understood the
edequette regarding income, I know there are rules and traditions).
Cheers
