Version 0.0.11 of my drawing program for blind students is now posted at:
http://www.austincc.edu/baldwin/SWT-SVG/SVGDraw01.zip and is available for
immediate download.
This version differs from the previous version in two major respects:
1. Import shape objects from existing drawings
This new capability allows you to create a library of drawings that you can
later import and combine to produce larger overall drawings. If you have
drawn it once and saved the SVG file, you should never need to draw it
again. Just import the old drawing into a new drawing and edit as
appropriate.
2. Move shape objects up and down in the stack of shape objects
You can think of an SVG drawing as a stack of individual shape objects. By
default, the shape object that you create first is at the bottom of the
stack and the shape object that you create last is at the top of the stack.
If you look down on the stack from above, those objects on or near the top
of the stack may cover and hide those objects further down the stack.
Sometimes this is important and sometimes it is not important.
For example, assume that you plan to use the ViewPlus IVEO software to
audibly display the drawing. If you draw a circle in the center of the page
and then draw a rectangle that is the same size as the page. the
rectangle will hide the circle and prevent the IVEO software from providing
audio information about the circle even if the rectangle is completely
transparent. To resolve this issue, you simply need to move the rectangle
object to the bottom of the stack, or at least move it far enough down the
stack that it is below the circle.
This new feature allows you to adjust the relative positions of shape
objects in the stack without having to redraw the shapes. This allows you to
resolve issues such as the one mentioned above with respect to the IVEO
system.
For the case of opaque objects, the relative positions of the shape objects
in the stack control which objects, or what portions of which objects, are
visible and which are not visible. Therefore, in some situations, the
capability to modify the relative positions of objects in the stack is an
important capability.
Regarding the IVEO system:
It is my understanding that due to licensing constraints, the SVG files
produced by this program will not produce audio output when loaded using the
free IVEO viewer software. However, it is my belief that SVG files produced
by this program will produce audio output when loaded using the IVEO Creator
software. Some of the folks that participate in these groups use IVEO, so
they may want to provide input on this.
Perform the following two steps to run the program
1. Extract all of the material from the zip file into an empty folder being
careful to preserve the directory tree structure.
2. Execute the file named RunSVGDraw01.bat.
It is not necessary for you to have Java or any other special software
installed on your computer to run the program. In fact, you should be able
to extract the contents of the zip file onto a USB flash drive and run the
program on any Windows system, Version XP or later, with 32-bit or 64-bit
hardware. Of course, you don't have to use a USB flash drive, I mention that
simply to emphasize the flexibility that you have with this program.
When the program starts, you will land on Home Base from which you can
select any of the actions provided by the menus. Instructions for opening
the Instructions document are printed on Home Base.
Alternatively, you can simply open the file named Instructions.htm in your
browser and read the instructions without running the program. A copy of
those instructions is attached to this message.
