Subject: [Txabs] Summer Merit Programs: brief course description and
contactlist
TABSters,
Please see below a message from our state affiliate President regarding STEM
summer camps. As we all know, the fields of Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math are rapidly growing, and the Texas Workforce
Commission has done some research with regards to in-state STEM summer camps
for us, the blind students. Please read over the message, as well as the
enclosed spreadsheet and feel free to contact our President, Kimberly
Flores, if you have any further questions.

list
Hello All,
I am excited to share the enclosed information with you about cutting edge
programs for blind students in Texas.
The Texas Workforce Commission has provided the attached spreadsheet of
Summer Merit Programs TWC is funding. They included in their assessment
questions to identify if programs were available for blind students. The
programs that are not are "hidden" columns. Some programs have indicated
"maybe".
I want to get students enrolled in these programs. As you know STEM subjects
and increased access to these fields is critical. This is an incredible
opportunity for enrichment right here in Texas that our very own state
agency has worked hard to share with our membership and contacts.
Programs range from one week to two weeks. Some programs are "day"
programs and others are "residential" meaning students reside in dorms while
attending. The NFB of Texas is committing to making this opportunity
available to blind students, so we will work with families to overcome
transportation barriers, etc. If students or parents are interested, please
contact me directly so I can assist you to make arrangements with the
specific program and facilitate the application process.
Please circulate widely! This is an important first step for our youth to
compete equally with their peers in the STEM subjects, while gaining
hands-on experience, building a network and improving their resume all in
one great experience. Please consider giving one of these programs a chance.
I assure you, the grant recipients for the Summer Merit Programs are
top-notch, innovative programs.
I look forward to talking with you soon about your interest and
applications!
Best,
Kimberly Flores
President, NFB of Texas
