Please remember that the current Nemeth code, in use for some 40 years, is
and always has been a unified code with rules for literary or narrative text
as well as mathematical expressions. All technical material, including STEM
textbooks, is currently transcribed following ALL the rules of the Nemeth
code, not just those rules for mathematical expressions. So we have long
experience with readers reading narrative text transcribed according to the
Nemeth rules which use lower numbers in almost all contexts. It is my
impression that the NUBS rules for narrative text are less different from
our current literary braille than are the Nemeth rules currently in use.
An important consideration to keep in mind is that technical texts typically
have a large amount of inline or embedded mathematical expressions. It
seems to me that it would be quite cumbersome to be constantly switching
rules when encountering inline math.
Sincerely,
Susan Jolly
