I would like to add two related and important pieces of information about
the nemeth symbols for less than and greater than. First, the dot patterns
formed by the raised dots of the two braille cells side-by-side resemble the
appearance of the print symbols for less than and greater than. This is why
Dr. Nemeth chose these two braille symbols. Second, you can remember which
one
is which because the dot 5 cell is always closer to or pointing to the
smaller quantity since it is only one dot whereas the dots 4 and 6 cell is
always closer to the larger quantity since it is two dots.
