[Blindmath] I'm Dying Here

Well, I lost my vision totally when I was 31 years old. So, I did not have
to go through high school with vision loss (just a thick pair of
eyeglasses). Now, I am a returning student at the ripe age of 49. I have a
notetaker from DSPS and she is a great help to me. But, I still have to get
the understanding in my head. I take notes in Word (which is limited to
me). I do not know how to use Word with math too well yet. But, I only
have 2 1/2 weeks more until the semester is over. This is my first college
algebra class being blind and I have gotten perfect scores on all my quizzes
and tests (except one). I have better experience and I know (with all of
your suggestions) how to pursue this better. Thanks. Elise

I'm curious, Elise, how much help did you have from a VI or Braillist/Aide
in math when you were in High School? I feel like our HS kids get a lot of
individualized help, but I worry that they'll be in your shoes when they get
to college. They get help because, as you pointed out, the classroom
teachers don't articulate very well, and they go too fast even when you
point out to them that they have a blind student in their midst.
Articulating well would help many of sighted students understand, too. You
may have to talk to your instructor more than once to get your point across.
Good luck.

I need a shoulder to cry on, everyone. I am in my algebra class and I am
drowning. We are finding the lcd of rational expressions and then making
the lcd equal between two expressions. My instructor is talking so fast and
using "this guy" instead of calling out the numerals. I want to give this
stuff up right now. Thanks for listening. Elise
