Justin,
If you are using JAWS, then you do have pretty decent access to SPSS version
22 . Insure you are good at moving between the pc and JAWS cursor as there
may be times in which you may have to do so. As it the case with any
Statistical program, knowing to read the output is the real key. Your
sighted counterparts can see what may be significant at a glance, while you
will be relying on your ability to find the right values to make your
decisions.
I do recommend that you do your best to always copy your "syntax" into a
text file for later use. We actually recommend that as well for sighted
people as they use the mouse. The GUI serves a purpose, but all higher
functionality of the program works better with the use of syntax.

Hello All!

I apologize if this topic has already been discussed, but for an Assessment
Methods course I'm taking we're using SPSS. I am completely unfamiliar with
this software. I was wondering if any have used it and know a few pointers
they are willing to share? Is it accessible with JAWS? I haven't explored
much with it yet, but wanted to reach out for further research!

Thanks as always!

Justin

Hello Justin,

Perhaps Vince Martin is the most qualified to answer your question, but I'll
start things going. You might also look through the list archive for more.

There are a number of Jaws users happily using SPSS. Personally it's not my
cup of tea, but I do recommend people stick with SPSS if the others around
them are using it. While your classmates are mouse clicking their way,
you'll be tabbing around as you would in any other application. I do
recommend you ensure you keep a copy of the commands employed for each part
of the analysis. You may need to check that this is occurring as there is no
guarantee that sighted users around you will be doing so.

You didn't explicitly say so but I assume you are going to use your own PC.
If you weren't planning on doing so, then the IT team is going to have some
fun getting it working for you.
Version 22 is supposed to be better than the version 21 I used for testing
and evaluation. As part of the installation, the extra requirements for Jaws
users will be taken care of. If you're using a lab computer, then these
extras may not have been installed by the IT team.

Note that my comments are only relevant for Jaws users. My experiments with
NVDA were far from successful.

Jonathan

Hi Jonathon & all,

Yes Its on my own PC and its verison 22 which I downloaded through a site
for Graduate Student work. Since I'm so unfamiliar with the program I
wanted to reach out to others like yourself who have used it along with
JAWS.

Thanks for the start of the discussion to come!

Justin
