I did my maths in braille all the way up until the end of high school, only
receiving a crash course in latex in the last three weeks before leaving.
your students only need to learn latex if they wish to communicate with
sighted peers such as at University. 
having said that, if they are likely to take a maths heavy subject beyond
the age of 18 then teaching them latex  is best done as early as possible ,
to make the code as instinctive as possible .
