[Blindmath] Learning Ally and Bookshare membership info

Here is the contact information for Learning Ally in case you want to pursue
using them. My son uses their audio books quite a bit. There is another
audio book publisher for visually impaired people named Bookshare.
Bookshare provides more braille resources which I don't think you are
interested in. The main differentiation between audio books from Learning
Ally and Bookshare is that Learning Ally's Audio Books are human read. Many
of Bookshare's audio books are mechanical voices. I am not commenting on
the quality of either - I think it's simply a matter of preference. My son
has a strong preference for human readers, but we have used audio books
from both sites - we are usually just happy to find one of his text books in
audio format. The people at Learning Ally are amazing. They have an office
at The University of Georgia and we have gotten to know the staff and they
are very supportive. You can call Learning Ally at 1-800-221-4792 or the
membership link is https://www.learningally.org/Adults/Join. The member
ship link for Bookshare is
https://www.bookshare.org/cms/bookshare-me/what-does-it-cost/subscription-fe
es. Good Luck!

Hello,

Have you heard of the Learning Ally Library? Perhaps RFB&D? Learning Ally is
the new name for RFB&D. It is a nonprofit organization that provides audio
textbooks to the blind. Students used to receive free membership to RFB&D,
and I was grandfathered into the system so the same rules apply to me, but
I'm not sure what individual memberships cost. They do have audio books on
Linear Algebra.

Hope this helps,

Zac

Hi: I am still slogging through some math websites and considering where to
buy or rent books from.
There is mathML, laTex and I just ran upon a site that loaded something
called MathJacks type which I think has to do with accessibility - havent
done much with these 3 yet.
I see a posting where a member is looking for a book to buy or borrow - is
this legal with e-books, if so are there folks out here who might have a
linear algebra book they found particularly accessible and understandable?
This can be an audio book or another format as mentioned above.
I am almost 70 years old and wont likely be learning braille which I know
would likely be the best bet but it is what it is so either audio or screen
reader accessible sites and books are what I am hoping to find.
Also, If you know of specific authors, Readers or Titles and sources could
you post up?

Another excellent place to search is the catalogue at
http://louis.aph.org/

If you find a suitable text there, you will then need to contact the
organization which holds it, details of which are included in the catalogue
entry.

Hi everyone,

I work in the K-12 sector with students with visual impairments and also
have a visual impairment myself. I'm in Canada, where we are using Unified
English Braille. It seems that MathPlayer only supports Nemeth when
displaying MathType content in braille. Does anyone know of an alternative
that can present MathType in UEB on a braille display?

Thanks for any information or resources.

Jen

Hi:

If it's math, use Nemeth. UEB math is not suitable for anything
relatively advanced.

Cheers

Hello Derek,

I know many of the people on this list are US based, but there are plenty of
us that live outside in countries where UEB has been adopted and if our
country ever used Nemeth then it is being phased out.

Personally, I struggle with solutions that enforce the attitude of doing
things the way the producer wants instead of what the consumer needs. This
is just one case in point, but having one braille solution is better than
having no solution which is what we find in other contexts.

I look forward to the time when it is the choice of the end-user and their
adaptive technology that determines how they read braille instead of it
being hard wired into the design of the device, operating system, or screen
reader.

Jonathan

Has anyone tried the chikrii or grindeq converters to convert LaTex into
MathType? I have tried the chikrii converter and while it imports the
formulas in an accessible MathType format, bibtech references don't come
through. Has anyone had any luck converting a LaTex to MathType with bibtech
references?
Thanks

As I have not used MathPlayer myself, the way I've interacted with MathType
content is when I've been receiving my math/physics assignments in college
and converting Word documents with MathType into Braille files through
Duxbury Braille Translator (DBT) software. I would think that DBT has a few
UEB templates that can be used when importing Word files with MathType
content and then translating them into Braille. This would be if one was to
read a formatted Braille (BRF) file on a BrailleNote or other similar
device, but I'm not sure if this could be a method for displaying math
content on the fly (say, when reading a Web page with math on it). Besides,
does Canada use UEB for math as well as literary content, or are they doing
something a bit like what the U.S. is trying to iplement in most places (UEB
for literary and Nemeth Code for math/science materials)?

Thank you,
Daniel

Hi Russell,

While I don't have a copy of it. It looks like you should be able to get it

All,

Regardless of what any of us think which code is best, many countries,
including Canada, have adopted UEB and Jennifer's question is a valid
question. Just switching codes is not a practical suggestion on a list that
has members from throughout the world. It would be best for us not to
become entangled in a long debate on this issue here. Thank you for your
help with this.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson, List Moderator

Hi Russell,

While I don't have a copy of it. It looks like you should be able to get it
from Access Text.

Hope that helps,
Kristen

Thanks so much.

Hi Russell,

Accesstext.org is one supplier of alternative format books.
They are digital files, such as PDF or Word. Which isn't as useful as I was
hoping.

MathPlayer's braille support makes use of liblouis. At the time of the
latest MathPlayer release, liblouis did not support UEB math. I know
supporting UEB math is something the liblouis group is working towards, but
AFAIK, it has yet to make it into a liblouis release. If I'm wrong about
this, I hope someone who is active in that group will correct me.

I have run into the same problems.

On another notes, in the K-12 realm many states have adopted UEB in whole in
which case, students will no longer be using Nemeth.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your suggestion. Ideally, I'm looking for a way that someone
could access MathType directly in Word while reading a document using a
braille display with a screen reader. In Canada we are using UEB for
everything, whether literary or math or other technical material.

Thank you,
Daniel
