As far to learning basic stuff, i can be done. In a real life scenario
this is much harder with the tools that we have nowadays.
I am a programmer at google and I got a task to deal with some stuff
that required heavy data science. Although the programming part I could
deal, the visualization was much, much harder. things that my
colleagues would see in a second, I had to poke the data around to
confirm initial hypothesis.
I got the impressions that by seeing the graphs, they had a huge
advantage, they had an overall idea of how the data looked like, they
easily spotted outliers, and keep in mind that we are talking about the
basic stuff.
I ended up having some ideas, investigated the data and eventually
finished that thing, but I am pretty sure that a sighted friend would
have done it way faster.

I also am using sonification of data to interpret graphical output as well. Work is being done for sonifying graphs using "R", SAS has intergrated what we called the "sonification sandbox" in Dr. Bruce Walker's sonification lab at Georgia Tech and it is readily available right now. It was unveiled at CSUN this Spring and I use it with SAS right now. I am also using sonified graphs with the graphical output of SPSS in my current research as well. I am up to dissertation proposal on what type of experiment I want to do, but I am sure it is similar to what most data analysts also use to make inferences with their visual graphs as well.
