Sabra,
I suppose if you’re just writing for yourself, you can use whichever notation you feel comfortable with, even a personal/Invented code.
Otherwise, no, Sabra, it’s not “counterproductive” to learn a markup language that can easily be converted to a readable format, such as a printed PDF or MathML document, for others (particularly sighted people) to look at.
