I have started working on a brf editor for linux. All I have so far, is
a braille typewriter emulator. But I thought some folks on this list
might like to play with it. Point a browser to
http://www.math.wisc.edu/~jheim/brfedit/
The source code and a (really plain) make file are in there. But you
ought to just be able to download the binary at
http://www.math.wisc.edu/~jheim/brfedit/brfedit and run it.
All it does right now is allow you to type the complete English
alphabet. You need to get to the linux console (like with speakup) and
put your fingers on the keyboard home row, left index finger on the f
and right on the j. Then you can type as if you are using a regular
braille typewriter. So the f key all by itself makes a braille letter a.
The f key and d key together make a braille letter b. The f key and the
j key make a braille letter c. Etc.
To get out of the program, you just have to wait 10 seconds. That code
is stolen from a program that is part of the linux kernel, showkey. Most
of the code is stolen from that program.
Obviously I have a lot of work to do before I have an editor. But I
think it's no small feat getting the braille keyboard emulator working.
The next thing I will probably do is to see if I can borrow editor code
from somewhere like edbrowse. Then I will have to figure out how to save
files as brf.
