[BlindMath] Opening BRF files (Susan Jolly)

New to this list, I hope this email goes out properly. I am also very new to this area and joined the list to learn more but I have played with BrailleBlaster (https://www.brailleblaster.org/) in the past and it is able to preview BRF files and I think even convert the braille characters to the Roman character set to check transcription. Maybe this would be helpful?

Thank you, Susan, for your reply, and thank you to everybody else for their replies to my queries.
Although BRF files open in a text editor like Notepad, as you pointed out, will the braille also display correctly in Notepad? or even Microsoft Word?
And, having checked the "Interpret Formatted Braille Without Interpretation" checkbox in the Formatted Braille Importer dialog box under the Global menu, can one rest assured that, just like the page numbering settings, the number of lines per page and the number of characters per line settings in the original BRF will also not be altered to the Duxbury's settings as adjusted from within the Embosser Setup dialog box in either the Document or Global menu?
For example, suppose I want to open the UEB Sample files available for download from the UKAAF website, and those files have been created using 28 characters per line and 25 lines per page. How best to ensure those specific settings of the BRF files are retained when I open them using the DBT 12.3, for instance, irrespective of what the settings are DBT's Embosser Setup dialog boxes in either the Document or the Global menu?

A BRF file is just a plain text file.  I find that usually the easiest way to open one is with a simple text editor like Notepad.  All that is required is to change the file extension to .txt.  You can of course first make a backup copy of the BRF file if you want to be extra cautious.

Dear Saaqib,
I agree with Daniel. My colleagues and I have been preparing several such BRF documents, and we insert similar directions for opening them. We too have found that otherwise formatting changes in very strange ways at times. Granted we have created some cute mazes and other mathematically fun BRFs for very young mathematicians, but they open beautifully following these instructions. We also have BRFs for the more mature mathematician, and those open up equally nice.

Dear Saaqib,

To open a BRF in Duxbury with original formatting, you'll first need to go to the Formatted Braille Importer dialog box under the Global menu. Check the checkbox that says "Read formatted Braille without interpretation".
This will make it so that Duxbury doesn't automatically add page numbers that are already in the BRF, among other formatting changes. Checking this box will hide all the other formatting options that come after it when unchecked. Then open the BRF using Duxbury (use the "Open With" submenu under the file's context menu to find Duxbury). The Import File dialog will appear, after which you can simply press Enter to accept the options.

There are lots of books on mathematics available in either PDF or DJVU, and a blind person pursuing mathematical sciences would like those materials to be accessible using the commonly used screen reading programs.
