Subject: [BlindMath] Workshop on Accessible Mathematics For Blind High-School and College Students

Dear list,

Recently I responded to an email thread about college-level math for blind students, and I have gotten many people reach out to ask me questions. I'm very happy to see so many people interested in mathematics for themselves or their children!

Because of this response, I am planning on running an online workshop in August, on how to make mathematics accessible for blind students at the high-school and college level. This workshop would be for interested students, parents, and educational support staff. I will talk about the technologies and strategies I use, show some demonstrations, and have some time to answer questions.

Please let me know if you would be interested, and let others not on the list know if you think they would be! I will have more details figured out in the coming weeks, and will post a schedule and participation info to this list. If you have any particular questions or concerns you want me to try to cover, then feel free to suggest them by email.

A little bit about me: I am near-totally blind from birth, and I use screen readers and Braille. I just completed my bachelor of science in mathematics at the University of Toronto, and I will be continuing in the Fall with graduate studies in pure mathematics at the University of Cambridge. I have done graduate-level coursework in mathematics, I engage in research with professors, and I participate in competitive international programs for mathematics students; such as this year's undergraduate summer school at the Park City Mathematics Institute, run by the Institute for Advanced Study. For the past 2 years, I have also been working full-time as a software developer at IBM.

As you can see, being blind does not have to prevent you from participating and succeeding in the fields of mathematics and technology, and I hope to show you some good strategies for achieving this.

I look forward to hearing from you, and meeting you in August.

Cheers,
Hussain Kadhem
