There are also LaTeX syntax checking tools such as lacheck (standardly supplied with the TeX Live distribution) for identifying errors.
Using a LaTeX-supporting text editor that helps with the syntax by completing the names of macros and environments, or providing keyboard commands for them, also helps.
I've had very little trouble with LaTEX syntax errors - and I've been using it for a long time. The above are among the reasons why this is the case.
