[BlindMath] BlindMath Digest, Vol 189, Issue 2

Hello,

Given your comment about Java's future, how will development continue?

My assumption is that Java is what creates the front end, with something more efficient for mathematical calculations underneath. (Correct?)

Specifically,

Has effort been put into choosing the design parameters of the new product that will eventually replace the Java based one yet?
If so, do these parameters include making sure that accessibility as per s508 of the ADA is incorporated?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hi Kennedy and Jonathan,

Web version of MATLAB (that is MATLAB Online) is more accessible simply because it is built using web technologies (HTML, etc.) which offer better keyboard and screen reader accessibility features out of the box and allows us to follow WCAG guidelines more easily. The desktop version of MATLAB, which was written in Java, is not as well supported anymore since Java is quickly becoming deprecated, even obsolete.

As a side note, even the IDE environment and the graphics are now much more accessible in MATLAB Online, so it might be worth a second try if anyone is interested.

Thanks,
Bora

I've wondered about this myself. I attempted to use both the online and Desktop versions in graduate school, and the online version was definsely better. I would love to know why this is the case, especially given that I will be returning to school for my doctorate, and Matlab is probably in my future once again. :-)

For example, MATLAB Online, which is the web version of MATLAB, is a lot more accessible for keyboard and screen reader users. You can find some info about it at these links:
