I have only used it once, and ultimately switched to Graphviz instead 
for the particular project (I was in a hurry, and the TikZ diagrams were 
overflowing the page dimensions for reasons that I didn't have time to 
work out).

Don't let this discourage you. TikZ is the right tool for diagram 
creation in LaTeX documents.

I would recommend its user manual, and the examples that you can find on 
the web.

There are also TikZ packages for specific types of diagrams, such as 
flow charts.
