If you can get a epub, or pdf of what ever book, you can get a $20/mo claude subscription. You can give claude this prompt:

Take this book, and convert it into clean accessible epub format. Please proadd image descriptions where there are images, and use accessible math format in the text to make the math accessible.

I usually just give it the entire book, but you can just ask for specific chapters.

Hope it helps.

Hello,

I have used Infty reader to perform OCR on multiple textbooks that contain mathematic notation.
You can find the software at www.inftyproject.org.
I just reviewed the website and see that the enterprise license is $1000.
A chat bot may be a better way to do OCR but I have not seen a comparison between Infty reader and another method.
There are times when all you have is a bound printed math textbook.
For these times I go to a place like a university that has a fancy copy center where I can pay a nominal fee to unbound the book.
I then scan the book and save as a pdf file.
You must make sure that dpi is 600.
It is helpful to find a high-end scanner that can do double sided scanning, etc.
The next step is to point Infty reader to each of the pdf files and convert them to math ML or latex.
There is absolutely an expectation that a sighted person will be updating equations and correcting corrupted segments of the math.
On the other hand it is amazing how good the math can read without any human corrections.
I would absolutely include human equation cleanup as part of this work flow before being scored for a letter grade in a course.
I do recall scanning an entire text (300 print pages or so) and having the entire work segmented in chapters saved in latex waiting for human intervention to upgrade the quality.
The process without human equation cleanup took no more than 8 hours.

Very Best,
John Miller

Subject: Re: [BlindMath] Seeking guidance for Discrete Mathematics

There is no one-size-fits-all prompt for making a document accessible.
The correct approach depends on the document’s format, content, complexity, and
intended audience. Mathematics adds another layer because an equation that is
visually clear may be completely unusable with a screen reader or refreshable
braille display.
BITS has a system that reviews documents using multiple AI agents, but you must
be a BITS member to use it.
With that said, one way to develop a good starting point is to ask ChatGPT to write the accessibility prompt for you. I originally entered the following request:
“Write me a prompt to review a document and make sure it is accessible to all users, including people who are blind.”
I have since expanded the resulting prompt to address mathematical equations, formulas, graphs, tables, notation, spoken math, and braille mathematics.
The research behind these additions is important. Microsoft Word supports structured equations created with its native equation tools, including UnicodeMath and LaTeX input. APH products such as BrailleBlaster and Monarch can translate properly structured MathML or Word equations into Nemeth or UEB Math/Science. APH also notes that some MathML content may require tools such as MathCAT or Access8Math to work correctly with NVDA.
Here is the revised prompt:
-----
Review and revise the attached document to make it as accessible and usable as possible for everyone, including people who are blind, have low vision, use a screen reader or refreshable braille display, navigate only with a keyboard, have limited mobility, are color-blind, or have cognitive or learning disabilities.
The document may contain mathematical equations, formulas, symbols, graphs, diagrams, tables, proofs, and other STEM content. Treat the accessibility of this material as an essential part of the review.
Before revising the document, identify its format, such as Word, PDF, HTML, EPUB, PowerPoint, or another format. Apply the accessibility practices appropriate for that format.
Preserve the document’s original meaning, important information, mathematical accuracy, notation, and overall tone. Correct spelling, grammar, and unclear wording when needed, but do not change the meaning of the mathematics.
GENERAL DOCUMENT ACCESSIBILITY
Check and improve the following:
list of 18 items
1. Use a clear document title and a logical heading structure. Use actual heading styles rather than bold text, font size, or visual appearance alone.
2. Use short paragraphs, descriptive headings, plain language, and consistent terminology when appropriate for the intended audience.
3. Format lists as real numbered or bulleted lists instead of manually typed numbers, symbols, or dashes.
4. Give every meaningful image, chart, graph, diagram, and graphic an appropriate text description. Mark decorative images as decorative.
5. If an accurate image description cannot be written from the available information, do not guess. Insert:
“[An accurate description requires information from the author or a subject matter expert.]”
6. Make link text meaningful when read by itself. Replace wording such as “click here” or a raw URL with text describing the link’s destination or purpose.
7. Make tables accessible:
list of 7 items nesting level 1
• Use tables for data, not visual layout.
• Identify column and row headers properly.
• Keep the structure as simple as possible.
• Add a caption or brief description when helpful.
• Do not use blank cells solely for spacing.
• Explain complex tables in surrounding text.
• Ensure the reading order makes sense when the table is read one cell at a time.
list end nesting level 1
8. Do not communicate information through color, position, shape, size, or visual appearance alone. Add text labels, patterns, symbols, or other indicators.
9. Ensure sufficient color contrast. Avoid backgrounds, patterns, or formatting that make text difficult to read.
10. Use readable fonts, reasonable font sizes, adequate spacing, and left-aligned text when appropriate. Avoid long passages in all capital letters, italics, or underlining.
11. Ensure the document has a logical reading order for people using screen readers and refreshable braille displays.
12. Expand or explain abbreviations and technical terms the first time they appear unless the intended audience can reasonably be expected to know them.
13. Give form fields, checkboxes, and controls clear programmatic labels and instructions if the document contains a form.
14. Identify the document’s primary language and mark passages written in another language when the format supports language identification.
15. Add captions and transcripts for referenced or embedded audio and video.
16. Avoid directions that depend only on visual location, such as “see the box on the right.” Refer to the section, equation, figure, or item by its title or number.
17. Make page headers, footers, page numbers, footnotes, and endnotes accessible and logically connected to the main content.
18. If the format supports document properties, add a meaningful document title, author, subject, primary language, and appropriate keywords.
list end
MATHEMATICAL AND STEM ACCESSIBILITY
Review every equation, formula, symbol, graph, proof, and mathematical expression. Apply the following requirements:
list of 20 items
1. Do not represent mathematics only as an image, screenshot, scanned page, or arrangement of ordinary text characters.
2. Preserve mathematics as structured, editable content whenever possible:
list of 4 items nesting level 1
• For HTML and EPUB, use valid MathML or another method that exposes structured MathML to assistive technology.
• For Microsoft Word, use the current built-in Equation Editor or Office Math rather than an image or an obsolete equation object.
• Preserve accurate LaTeX, UnicodeMath, or MathML source when it is available.
• Do not replace a structured equation with plain text or an image merely because the visual result looks the same.
list end nesting level 1
3. Ensure each mathematical expression can be recognized as mathematics and read in the proper sequence by a screen reader.
4. Preserve the structure of fractions, exponents, subscripts, roots, matrices, limits, integrals, summations, equations, and grouped expressions. Do not flatten complex mathematics into an ambiguous line of characters.
5. Use proper Unicode mathematical symbols or structured mathematical markup. Do not substitute visually similar characters. For example, do not use the letter “x” when the multiplication sign or a structured multiplication operator is intended.
6. Make the boundaries of complex expressions clear so a screen-reader user can determine where a numerator, denominator, exponent, root, matrix row, or grouped expression begins and ends.
7. Retain equation numbers as accessible text and associate references such as “Equation 4” with the correct equation.
8. Define variables, unfamiliar symbols, abbreviations, and notation when they are introduced. Keep the terminology and notation consistent throughout the document.
9. Provide a brief explanation of the purpose or meaning of an equation when that information would help the reader understand it. Do not use a plain-language description as a replacement for the structured equation.
10. Do not rely on automatically generated alt text as the only accessible version of a complex equation. Alt text may provide a short fallback, but the structured mathematical expression must be preserved whenever possible.
11. When mathematics is supplied only as an image and cannot be converted confidently, preserve the image and insert:
“[This mathematical expression requires transcription into structured mathematical markup and verification by a subject matter expert.]”
12. Ask which braille mathematics code is required before producing braille. The appropriate code may be Nemeth Code, UEB Math/Science, or another code required by the intended audience or country. Do not assume that one braille mathematics code is correct for every reader.
13. If braille mathematics is requested:
list of 6 items nesting level 1
• Produce it from correctly structured mathematical source.
• Identify the braille code used.
• Preserve necessary code-switching indicators.
• Do not invent braille symbols or contractions.
• Flag the braille for review by a qualified braille transcriber or knowledgeable braille mathematics reader.
• Do not claim that AI-generated braille is certified or transcription- ready without expert review.
list end nesting level 1
14. For mathematical graphs, charts, geometry figures, number lines, coordinate planes, and scientific diagrams:
list of 5 items nesting level 1
• Provide a concise overview of what the graphic represents.
• Provide a detailed description of the important spatial relationships, labels, axes, units, scales, trends, intersections, coordinates, maxima, minima, and other information needed to answer questions about it.
• Include the underlying data in an accessible table when appropriate.
• Do not rely on color, line style, position, or visual shape alone.
• Identify situations in which a tactile graphic or physical model is needed because a text description cannot adequately communicate the spatial information.
list end nesting level 1
15. For geometry and other spatial mathematics, clearly identify points, lines, angles, shapes, dimensions, relationships, and labels. Preserve the information needed to create an accurate tactile graphic.
16. For matrices, aligned calculations, and multi-line derivations, preserve row, column, and alignment relationships. Do not convert them into an ambiguous paragraph of symbols.
17. For proofs and worked examples:
list of 4 items nesting level 1
• Present each step in a logical reading order.
• Explain the purpose of major transformations when appropriate.
• Clearly associate explanations with the equations they describe.
• Do not rely on arrows, indentation, highlighting, or position alone to show how one step follows another.
list end nesting level 1
18. For chemistry, physics, statistics, computer science, and other STEM content, preserve the semantic meaning of specialized notation. Flag any notation that requires review by a subject matter expert.
19. If the document format cannot reliably support accessible mathematics, recommend and, when possible, provide an accessible alternative such as structured HTML, accessible EPUB, or a properly prepared Word document. Do not assume that adding tags or alt text to a PDF will make complex mathematics fully accessible.
20. Do not add excessive descriptions that interrupt reading unnecessarily. Keep brief descriptions concise and provide longer descriptions separately when appropriate.
list end
TESTING AND VERIFICATION
Use WCAG 2.2 Level AA principles where they apply. For EPUB, consider EPUB Accessibility requirements. For PDF, consider PDF/UA requirements.
Do not claim that the document is fully accessible or compliant solely because an AI system or automated accessibility checker reviewed it.
Recommend testing with the formats and tools that the intended audience actually uses. Testing should include, when applicable:
list of 11 items
• The document format’s built-in accessibility checker.
• Keyboard-only navigation.
• Reading-order inspection.
• Color-contrast verification.
• At least one screen reader.
• A refreshable braille display when braille access is required.
• Navigation into and through complex mathematical expressions.
• Spoken rendering of fractions, roots, exponents, matrices, integrals, summations, and other complex structures.
• Braille translation into the requested mathematics code.
• Review of tactile graphics or detailed descriptions.
• Review by a blind mathematics reader, qualified braille transcriber, accessibility specialist, or subject matter expert.
list end
RETURN THE FOLLOWING
list of 7 items
1. The complete revised document.
2. A short summary of the general accessibility improvements made.
3. A separate summary of the mathematics and STEM accessibility improvements.
4. A list of equations, graphics, notation, or other content that could not be corrected confidently.
5. A list of questions requiring answers from the author, including the required document format, assistive technologies, educational level, and preferred braille mathematics code.
6. A final human-testing checklist tailored to the document’s format and mathematical content.
7. A clear warning about any content that still requires review by a qualified accessibility specialist, braille transcriber, blind mathematics reader, or subject matter expert.
list end
Do not remove important content merely because it presents an accessibility problem. Correct it when possible and clearly flag anything that cannot be corrected without additional information.
-----
This is still a starting point, not a replacement for accessibility testing or human review. AI can identify and correct many problems, but it cannot guarantee that a document is fully accessible simply because it revised it. This is especially true for advanced mathematics, braille translation, and tactile graphics.

On a somewhat related but different note, does someone already have a good AI prompt they use to make documents accessible and which platform do you use it on?
