[Blindtlk] drawing ideas

Hi Julie,

I was recently plagued (smile) by the prospect of trying to understand graphics in a math course. I spoke with Cary Supalo (I think most of you know him) who has taken numerous math courses and has just received his PHD in chemistry.

Anyway, he told me about the tracing wheel, which can be used in conjunction with some sort of foam pad. A foam mouse pad might even work. Anyway you apply a little pressure and create tactile lines with this tracing wheel. My understanding is that you can purchase these in local craft stores.

I actually used one of these as a child in school and had completely forgotten until Cary mentioned it. It is a small device, about the size of a pen, and has a little serrated wheel on the end. This isn't a sharp device at all, but the serrated edge helps to make the tactile lines.

As for identifying color, I am not sure how you would do that. Maybe they have different tracing wheels with different types of edges, so that you could use them like people use the different color crayons. I don't know whether they have variations in these or not, but you might check.

Subject: [Blindtlk] drawing ideas

Hello!

I'm wondering if anyone has inexpensive ideas on how to do tactile drawings? The drawings will be free form pictures for recreational purposes. I mentor a young lady in junior high school who is sighted. She enjoys drawing and I'd like to figure out some way that we could draw together.

I'm fairly good with sewing and craft things and would be willing to put something together. I'm also willing to spend up to $20 on materials. Bonus points if there is some way to incorporate various tactile surfaces to represent color. I'd like to purchase supplies locally instead of ordering them if at all possible.

I'd really appreciate any ideas or resources.

Thanks much!
Julie
