Mari:
I would move to the planned community.  If you get in a bind, you can always 
call a cab.  You can also get to know others in the new neighborhood.
I love my planned community and your community sounds exactly like my 
community.  If my wife is out of town, I don't mind spending money on a cab. 
We can afford it and it is not a problem.  It sounds like you are in the 
same position.
