When it was decided that we would move, we first checked into using the
company that my hjusband's employer uses and have them do it all. It was
going to take every bit of our moving allowance for this so we decided to
use ABS (their website is youpack.com). They bring the truck to you, or
container if you don't have too much stuff, and you pack and load it. It
stays in front of your house for several days, about three working and a
weekend. You load it up. I am married to a man who is quite the work horse
and between him, our help and me, we were able to pack everything up
ourselves. Took lots of effort and it would be quite difficult to do by
oneself unless you were very organized. After 2 weeks of waiting, the truck
was parked out in front of our house and, again, we had several days to
unload. Friends from church here helped with the carrying of the boxes and
we began the tedious chore of unpacking. Because of the distance we were
moving, we decided to do it this way. I have also done the move where the
movers pack and unpack at the other end. Actually, they just get the truck
unloaded, which, of course, is a big help. The work really begins when you
have to figure out where everything goes. This become especially difficult
if the place you are moving into is a bit smaller than the place you moved
out of, as in thec ase of our most recent move. With all of the previous
suggestions, I think that most any move can be done in a somewhat sane
manner. Just don't bring along a kicking and screaming teenager, if you can
help it. That's when it becomes very difficult. LOL

Bonnie,

Wow that sounds like a huge move. I am assuming you used a moving company?
To which one did you use? And would you recommend them again. 

The reason I ask, I have a storage unit in Texas with a large one bedroom
apartment worth of stuff. I live in PA now, and I would like to have my
things moved up here. 

If anyone has any good recommendations about moving companies, please share.
I have heard good and bad things, and I am unsure what to believe.

Including dealing with a very grumpy teenager who did not want to move, I
Did not stay ahead of some of those things. Were I to do it again, I would
docsome of the following things. First, identify the most important things
that you are worried about. If they are things that generally stay safe in
there drawer locations, put them in baggies and leave them safe in their
locations. Remember, you won't be without them for verylong if at all. We
have been in Alaska nearly 20 days (according to the counting teenager), and
we just got our truck unloaded this past Saturday. We did not see most of
our stuff for three weeks from the time it left GA. We had to figure out
what was most important to check as luggage when we flew and I must say, we
came wit some things we didn't really need to and made it here without some
other things that we wish we had. As far as your paper work goes, I would
put it in a very large ziplock bag, (They make them 2 gal size), and stick
it either in a backpack which you will have with you personally as you move,
or in your "underware drawer). If it is going to be hard to get to your
childrens' clothes immediately, have each of them pack a 2-3 day suitcase
that they can carry in the car with them. Of course, since you are taking
your furniture and not moving very far, the nicest thing is that most
everything can stay in your drawers. That always helps with the unpacking. 

For things that are currently in the cabinets, not coming with you, get some
of those small things that you are most concerned about and put them
together in a large ziplock bag. Then, when the box is packed with those
things in it, be sure that the label says something like (bag misc), as part
of the items in the box. One of the most important rules of moving is to
label every single box that goes on that truck. If you are packing boxes and
no one is around to help label in print, then, by all means label in
Braille. If you don't use Braille, figure out a system where you can put
tape or Velcro patterns on each box which would stand for each different
room. 
We did not bring any of our dressers and very little of our furniture in
general. 
I hope this helps. Remember, most things will turn up again. I'm still
missing plenty but I know that when we bring some more boxes in from the
garage, many things will suddenly appear again. Right now, I have my knives
with no holder for them. I have a much smaller kitchen and it would be nice
to get the knives out of the limited drawer space and on the counter in
their holder.

Hi Foundationers,

I have a question about moving? I am packing up my house and I seem to be
having a lot of trouble packing up things in fear I won't know how to find
it later. Especially small items that are in cabinets or medicine drawers.
Any suggestions? Please let me know what you all have done. We are only
moving about 6 miles away. So it seems silly to box everything up. But I'm
afraid to loose certain tiny things. Plus I am so afraid to loose paperwork
that I keep on top of my desk and in the drawer of my desk? What would you
do?
