I'm just curious. How do they handle the security situation with someone who is using a dog? Doesn't the harness have some metal on it? How does that work?

I agree and do the same as you; I collapse the cane and put it in the
bucket. When it comes to airport security and T S A, to argue the point is a
no-win proposition. And yes, the metal tip might be enough to set the alarm
off in some airports; different airports set the alarms at different levels
of sensitivity.
I realize that some may consider it a matter of principle that they should
be able to use their canes while going through the screening device.
However, as a practical matter, I have to wonder why this is such a big
deal; one only has to take two or three steps through the device and as long
as one doesn't touch the sides (I keep one hand behind me during the
process), you won't trigger the alarm if you haven't any metal on you. Are
we in general so directionally-challenged that we cannot take three steps
without a cane? After all, I've never seen one of these devices that
debouched onto a flight of stairs! (grin)
