[Blindtlk] Directions for Me

Hi Kerri,

Is there a rehabilitation center in your area or any home rehab teaching available? It is really too bad that your parent's were like that. I know many people with parents who were the same way. I'm sure They love you and think they are doing you a favor, but really they are not at all. My parents had some quirks and some condescending ways, but they weren't nearly as bad as some that I have seen.

Hi Diane:

Well, when you havent had training, and your parents do not let you
use the stove for anything...you adapt to the microwave real quick. My
parents have this dumb fear of me "burning" my hands off...they make
everything on the stove and they have a gas stove so...i've never been
allowed or encouraged to touch it.

Now that I live on my own, I can do whatever I want on my electric
stove...but I don't have anybody to first help me label it, and
secondly show me how to do basic things on the stovetop such as
browning ground beef or making simple recipes. I am too scared of
starting a fire and not knowing what to do or I would try it myself.
My apartment is tiny, and I live on the third floor (the top of the
building) so...

So, I use the microwave, oven, George foreman grill, and crockpot.
There is no nfb chapter in my area and it doesn't seem that any other
blind people live here so...
