Job Description and Responsibilities
The Policy Research Associate will provide substantive research assistance for the Policy Department staff and will be responsible for a variety of day-to-day substantive and administrative tasks.  The Policy Research Associate will also provide some research and other assistance to the President & CEO and COO and Executive Vice President, including the following:

Research
o The Policy Research Associate will conduct research on a range of civil and human rights policy issues, with a focus on criminal justice and human rights.  The research tasks include legislative research, legal research, research for policy reports, and other educational materials as requested by Policy Department staff.
Preparing Materials
o The Policy Research Associate will be responsible for drafting materials on various policy issues including talking points, fact sheets, speeches, letters to Congress and federal agencies, web and blog posts.
o The Policy Research Associate will be responsible for sending materials to members of Congress, including advocacy letters from The Leadership Conference on pending legislation.
Serve as Staff Representative
o The Policy Research Associate will serve as the staff representative for the Policy Department at relevant Leadership Conference task force meetings, legislative hearings, coalition meetings, conference calls, meetings with agency and legislative staffs, and other events, networks, conferences, and meetings.

Administrative Support
The Policy Research Associate will perform various administrative and clerical duties, including scheduling meetings, tracking legislation, maintaining legislative target lists, sending materials to the Congress, updating list serves, and delegating and overseeing intern projects as appropriate.
Monitor
The Policy Research Associate will monitor relevant civil rights cases in the Supreme Court, civil rights legislation in Congress, human rights treaties, and civil rights articles on blogs, websites, and in newspapers.

Qualifications:
Bachelors degree required.  Masters Degree or equivalent work experience preferred.  Some experience with criminal justice and/or human rights issues Personal commitment to civil and/or human rights issues Proficiency in Internet research Exceptional written and oral communication skills Ability to work independently and take initiative Ability to manage a complex workload and organize time efficiently Ability to work with diverse groups of people Some knowledge of the legislative process a plus

Salary and Benefits:  Salary is based on the Leadership Conference compensation scale.  Excellent benefits package provided.
