Hi Nikki,

If you really don't want to fold your cane, the NFB straight cane
is a lot lighter than any of the folding canes.  In fact,
according to the NFB and my O and M teacher, the folding cane is
about twice as heavy as the NFB straight cane.  I like that
lightness because it (in my opinion) is easier to travel with and
get more information out of, since it's easier to tap with.  The
only hard part about that cane is where to put it, especially in
crowded areas.  I'd suggest then to lay the cane down across your
body from left to right, then roll it back a little bit with your
feet and put one or both feet under it.  If anybody else has any
suggestions on the placing of the cane, please let us know.  You
can get the cane from the NFB either by buying it from the
Independence Market or by signing up for the free white cane
program.  If you want to buy from Independence Market, go to
nfb.org and press Enter on the
products and technology link.  From that page, click on
Independence Market.  To sign up for the Free White Cane Program,
go to nfb.org and press Enter on the Request a Free White Cane
link.  From that page, you can either fill out the application
online or download and print it.  You can also call the national

    Not to butt in, but I was curious about something.
Is there a new kind of cane that is lighter weight than the
graphite folding
canes?
I'm tired of having to fold my cane every time I get in a car or
at the
grocery store with my mom, I don't like making people wait on me.

So any insight would be nice.

Oh, OK.  Thanks.  I have heard of these.  There was actually a
discussion of
them on this list a few weeks ago.

I have a 50/50 cane, which I use on occasion.  But, I'll still
stick with my
long, straight fiberglass cane.  It's the best I've found.
